What's in a Name? The Symbolisms of Names: 'Ezra'

The naming of Star Wars characters, especially when the names used are from “our” galaxy, is an interesting thing to ponder. The origins of the name ‘Luke’, discussed in a previous article, only adds depth to the character of Luke Skywalker himself. Likewise, if we venture into the origins of the name ‘Ezra,’ we should find a deeper understanding of the character Ezra Bridger, the main protagonist of the Disney XD TV show, Star Wars: Rebels.

Ezra Bridger and the Ghost Crew

‘Ezra’ is originally a Hebrew name which means ‘helper’ or ‘one who assists.’ The name of Ezra, like Luke, carries biblical references. Ezra was a Jewish scribe and priest whose ventures are discussed in the Book of Ezra, one of the books of the Hebrew bible. According to Jewish legend, Ezra led the Judean exiles out of Babylon back to the Promised Land of Palestine.

Knowing this, we can better understand Ezra Bridger’s intended role as a character in Rebels. Literally speaking, he ‘helps’ and ‘assists’ the Ghost Crew in their adventures across the galaxy and in their fight against the Empire. Additionally, he does take on a leadership role, increasingly after Kanan Jarrus’ blinding at the Sith Temple on Malachor. As he matures he becomes a heroic and courageous leader, guiding the Ghost Crew through the Imperial occupation of Lothal, eventually liberating the Outer Rim planet.
