Star Wars: Resistance (Trailer Reaction)
"Star Wars: Resistance" is Dave Filoni latest animated series taking place in the far far away galaxy. This newer series will look at the Resistance’s quest to bring down the First Order leading up to the events of “The Force Awakens” through the eyes of a new hot shot pilot named Kazuda Xiono; who has also been tasked with spying on The First Order. Excitement for the series was at an arguable fever pitch with the announcement of “The Clone Wars” getting a revival, fans are excited to get their hands on anything related to Filoni. In this First Order sympathizer’s opinion “Resistance” looks less than promising.
The show does have some things going for it (Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie reprising their roles of Poe Dameron & Captain Phasma respectively, Filoni’s knack for long-form storytelling) but the trailer is concerning. For one the animation style is a change that is jarring and somewhat unsightly. One could make a comparison to the Spider-Man animated show that aired on MTV with regards to the animation style. The other concern is that the show may lack in substance; which was a major complaint about “Rebels” as well, and that a more child-oriented tone will sacrifice complex and emotional storytelling for goofy antics, low stakes action, and cute factor. The argument that this is meant for an all inclusive audience, like TCW, seems to fade as it's clearly just meant for a young audience.
At the end of the day the jury is out on “Resistance” as the trailer is hardly enough to make a hard and fast prediction as to the quality of the show. For now my opinion rests as lukewarm and unenthusiastic but ready to have my mind changed.
