Mike Conley to the Jazz
Mike Conley was selected 4th Overall out of the Ohio State University and has been for quite a while now one of not only the most underrated Point Guards in the league but also one of the most underrated players in the league period!
Today we have received news that after 12 long years with Memphis he has been traded to the Utah Jazz for Grayson Allen, Kyle Korver, Jae Crowder, the 23rd overall pick in this year's draft and a 2020 projected first round pick.
Now before we dive into the trade let's all take a second to remember the team that was in Memphis as he is the last of that workhorse team that consisted of Conley, Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol and Toney Allen. They never won a championship or even made the NBA Finals for that matter but they were a blast from the past that was the closest resemblance to what basketball once was.
Part of the reason this trade has even taken place is a perfect segway from that actually and a valuable lesson to any NBA fan/player.
As much as Memphis clearly has Conley in their hearts for what he brought to that city at the end of the day it is a business and as banged up as Conley probably is about it both teams should benefit here.
On the Grizzlies end it's good for them to wash the slate clean and start a new and Conley was the last piece to that puzzle.
With two pretty nice looking draft picks, Kyle Korver who is on the back end of his career but is still lethal from range and can be a mentor, Jae Crowder, a guy who brings it every night and a glue guy that the Grizzlies fans should love and Grayson Allen who has shown flashes here and there despite how you feel about his on court antics the Grizzlies got exactly what they needed on paper.
As for the Jazz, as I said they not only got a good Point Guard they also got one of the most underrated ones. One of the best perimiter defender's in the league, a solid setup man, a knockdown shooter, a guy with a steady hand that knows how to run a team and control the pace of a game, a true veteran.
Perhaps his strongest attribute he can bring to the Jazz is providing a mentor for the young phenom that is Donovan Mitchell. Even without the leadership role taken into consideration this becomes one of the best backcourts in the league immediately.
And don't underestimate the power of a lefty. Doesn't matter how much gametape you've watched or how much you've played a guy, lefties like Michael Conley still give defenders fits because our first inclination is to go for that right hand.
This is another nice shakeup in the NBA with so many more to come. We'll keep an eye out there for more news in this loaded offseason that we can report to you immediately.
Michael Conley averaged 21.1 PPG (Career High) 3.4 RPG and 6.4 APG last Season.
